Windows provides plenty of natural lights in indoors. However when it comes to placing tv in a living room with lot of windows, the light coming from wrong side can cause unwanted glares.
To avoid glares and reflection of light on tv screen, the tv should be placed such that the back side of TV always faces the windows.
This is easy when the windows are on the same wall.
However, things becomes trickier when windows are placed in two or 3 walls of living room.
Below is a detail representation of tv placement in living rooms with lot of windows.
If windows are on 2 walls
If two walls that are perpendicular to each other have windows then place the Tv on the wall without window.
When there are windows on 2 perpendicular wall, both of the window has to be kept covered with curtains. In such a living room the tv can be placed facing the sofa.
It is a good practice to face the back side of to any one of the wall with window and back of tv towards the window that is on the wider wall.
If both walls are of same horizontal length then the other variable in living room i.e. sofa should be taken as a reference for tv placement.
Geometrically, the placement of TV should be parallel to the widest sofa of living room such that the screen of the tv faces the sofa.
PRO TIP
If the back of sofa is not facing the window then for correct placement of tv sofas should be rotated to face the windows else light from back will reflect on tv screen and cause glare.
If windows are on 3 walls
When there are windows on 3 walls of living room, and there are artworks placed on the fourth wall then then simply cover both windows that are opposite to each other and place the tv with its back facing towards the remaining window.
A very spacious and open living room with windows on 3 walls is very easy to work with when it comes to tv placement. Simply because there are not much choices to place tv.
The arrangement of sofas and other furniture present in living room also determines to a certain extent where exactly the TV should be placed.
Place the Tv with the best viewing angle (which is usually straight )and simply make sure no light falls on the tv screen from left or right side. This will greatly reduce the glare and reflections on screen.
The window to which the back of tv is placed should be covered properly with blinds or curtains as well.
What height to place tv in living room with lot of windows?
If there is proper space on the wall then the appropriate placement height for tv in living room with lot of windows is around 4.5 to 5 feet above the floor i.e around eye level while standing.
The placement height of tv on wall is also dependent over the distance at which the sofa is placed from the wall.
Generally, as the distance between wall and sofa increases the placement height of tv on the wall with respect to sofa also increases.
It is however also possible that there is no space at all on the wall to mount a tv in such case, tv stand with a height of at least 25″ should be used.
Comparing the placement of tv on all and on tv stand, Tv is always mounted higher on wall. This is because if there’s nothing underneath TV that is placed at lower height, visually when TV is off, the placement looks unsymmetrical.
Just to make the overall furniture of living room look symmetrical a Tv is always mounted higher on the wall as compared to on a tv stand
How far from windows to place tv in living room
Noramlly it is not advised to mount the Tv near a window. But if there is no space available to adjust for tv then Leave a gap of 6 to 8 inches between window and side of tv.
Tv if placed too close to the window then the chances of light reflecting on the tv screen increases.
A good amount of gap between side of tv and window ensures that minimum light falls over the tv screen when placed on the wall near window.
Should tv be placed on a stand or mounted on wall in a living room with a lot of windows?
Normally it is a personal choice whether to mount tv on a wall or place it on a stand. However, it is only in one situation that a tv stand should be preferred for placing tv instead of mounting it on a wall.
When the windows are on all 3 walls of living room and the arrangement of sofa cannot be rotated (i.e sofas have to face windows) then tv should be kept on a stand.
Placing the tv lower causes less amount of light to reach near the screen. Tv on a stand along with curtains on all the windows helps to create the perfect ambiance for watching tv regardless of the number of windows that are present in the living room.
Can a tv be wider than window?
Yes, a Tv in a living room can definitely be wider in size compared to the window but there is no rule that dictates the accurate size of tv when placed near window.
One of the benefits of having a wider tv is that due to its large size compared to window the tv becomes the point of focus in living room. This ultimately adds to the tv viewing experience.
But if the tv is of same width as that of window, then also as long as the window is covered properly, the small size of the tv does not impair the tv viewing experience.
The main thing to take care of while placing tv in a living room with a lot of windows is to prevent as much light as possible to fall on the tv screen from the window. What size the tv is of, is not important.
Can tv be placed in between two windows on a same wall?
The space between two windows is not a ideal place to mount a tv simply because there are two sides from where light is falling on the tv screen.
But if that is the only available spot for mounting a tv then make sure the windows are covered properly by blinds or with curtain of dark colour and also there should be a gap of at least 8 inches between tv and window at both left and right sides.
If there is less than 8 inches of space then to block light to fall on the tv, furniture items that can block the light from window to fall on tv screen can be used like a light blocking side strip for the window or a decorative panel to be placed between either side of tv.
