Should closet and window curtains match?

Often times a closet without doors is covered from the front by a curtain. This is a nice approach to hide and protect the clothes from direct sunlight and dust. However, choosing what color and what material of curtain can become difficult since so many choices are available.

To simplify the curtain preference I have explained some facts about curtain matching below.

Closet and window curtains should have a matching color scheme for an overall cohesive look of the room. Both curtains, however, need not to be of exactly same color as it can make the room look boring.

Below are some of the best practices to match closet curtains and window curtain colors.

Using a Monochromatic color scheme for curtains

One trick to get the closet curtains to match window curtains is to select the color of closet curtains which is a lighter shade of the color that window colors have.

So for instance the window curtains are of gray color the curtain on the closet can be of light gray color and vice versa i.e, if closet curtains are of gray color then the window curtains, can be of light gray shade.

Monochromatic colors of a particular color are simply lighter shades and darker shades of that same color.

Using complementary color scheme to match curtains

Another trick to match curtains is by picking a color that is a complementary match for the color of curtains. Complementary colors provides a solid contrast when placed together.

Since complementary color pairs is contrasting, using a complementary color scheme is difficult. That’s because, these pairs can add too much of a color in room than required.

For example the complementary color of yellow is blue. If the window curtains are of yellow color which is matching with other colors of the room but if blue curtains are added over closet, color blue might not match with any other thing present in room except the window curtinas.

To fix this problem with complementary colors, it is best to use a colors of lighter shade. Instead of yellow, faded yellow, whitish yellow can be used as the complementary pair of light yellow is light blue.

Since both these colors are not very striking, ,the contrast they create is also soft which is ideal for bedroom.

Should the materials of curtains match?

The short answer is yes. All curtains within one particular room should have the same primary material. Primary material can be natural ,synthetic and semi synthetic.

Having two curtains at different locations in a room that are different in material gives an inconsistent look to the room especially when window and curtain are placed in close proximity.

Curtains comes in various materials like fabric, vinyl ,faux fabric, acrylic etc.

When the window curtains are made of natural materials like wool, silk, cotton, linen then closet curtain can be made of any fabric material that is natrural.

When the material of curtain is something synthetic then natural fibres should not be used along with such curtains.

For instance, if window curtains are made up of vinyl, the closet curtain can be acrylic, polyester, nylon, rayon etc.

Should the pattern on curtains also match?

There is no rule that tells what type of pattern should be on the window and closet curtains. From a designer’s perspective the pattern on the closet curtain can be slightly different to the pattern on window curtain.

This helps to distinguish different areas of the room. One good trick to coordinate patterns on curtains is by using only those curtains in which the pattern is of same color.

If the pattern on window curtains is done by black color then the curtian on closet should also have a pattern in black color. Though the actual pattern need not to be exactly similar however, just by the virtue of having one color for the pattern both curtains can blend in together seamlessly in the room.

Should color of closet and window curtains match the color of room?

Yes, the color of window and closet curtains should coordinate with the color of the room.

Whenever choosing the color of curtains to be put over window and curtains one of the main considerations to take is the color of the room walls. While the curtain color should blend with room walls the color for curtain should not be exactly similar to the color of walls.

Using a monochromatic color scheme for the room walls and window curtains is one the favourite practices of interior designers.

In most modern bedrooms, more than one color is used in the bedroom such that three of the walls are of same color but the last remaining walls in painted in a different color.

In such a bedroom, the window and closet curtains should coordinate with the dominant color of the bedroom i.e the color which is used most in the room.

How to match curtains if one of the curtains is white

White color of curtains is basically universal when it comes to matching it with other curtain colors. To make sure that curtains of other colors are matching with white colors, using a lighter shade of color helps a lot.

Matching the colors of curtains is all about creating a contrast that looks good with the room in which they are to be placed. If the contrast from curtain colors is very sharp, the ambiance that create is very attention demanding.

In a bedroom high contrast colors are always avoided as it is a place for leisure. High contrast color are those colors which are very strong and vividshades of a color for example deep red, deep yellow, bright green etc. This is why curtinas of lighter or dull shades are preferred for bedroom.

These curtains when used along with white curtains not only matches with the overall scheme for curtains but also helps to create a smooth contrast ideal for bedroom ambiance.

Should color of closet curtain match with the color of the closet?

The short answer is no. If a curtain is placed over the closet then the closet would remain hidden most of the time. Any items that is not properly visible in a room need not to be matching with curtains that are used in that room.

Even when the curtain is slided and the closet is visible there are still clothes of different colors in the closet. This also keeps the actual color of closet hidden.

However, there are some situations in which the actual color of closet might need to be adjusted.

If the curtain placement is such that the boundaries of closet from the sides are visible even after the curtain fully covering the closet, the color of the closet should be changed. In a bedroom, the placement of the bedroom, however, can dictate whether to match the closet curtain with closet color.

If the bed is placed such that the sides of the closet are clearly visible even after covering it with curtain then instead of changing the color of closet curtain simply paint the closet in a color that goes well with the color of the curtain that is used over it.

The main priority while matching the closet curtain color should be to match it with the color of the window curtain first then the closet color should be adjusted if needed.
