Should blinds be lighter or darker than walls ?

For blocking outside light

All the blinds that are made out of fabric blocks the most amount of light when the color of their fabric in dark. Whereas wooden, plastic blinds can be lighter shade as light does not directly passes through them.

Also when light passes through fabric blinds, small amount of light manages to enter in the room. This light has a certain tint to it. This tint can add a nice warmth to the room when the color of blinds is dark.

For interior decor

Many interior designers prefer to have blinds in a color different than the walls. The most easiest way to find the color for blind that can match with a light color wall is to pick a darker shade of the same color that is used on the wall.

When the color of the wall itself is dark, then a lighter color blind can help to balance the dark them of the room.

For ease of maintenance

It is much easier to maintain a lighter color blind compared to a darker color blind. wooden as well as plastic blinds are very susceptible to scratches. These scratches are more visible on a darker color blind then on a blind with light color.

Talking about the fabric blinds, scratches are not really a concern here however these blinds can accumulate dust over them. Dust is more visible on a lighter color than on a darker color fabric blind.

Can blinds have more than one color?

Generally speaking blinds over a widow can have 2 to 3 different colors. But not all type of blinds should have multiple colors.

Among the different types of blinds type available, only sliding blinds and roller blinds can have more than one color.

Sliding blinds when used over a window area are always used in multiple numbers. Either all of them can have more than one color or some number of blinds can have a particular color while the remaining blinds can have a different color such that when in a closed position the multiple colors complement each other.

The main reason for other type of blinds like Venetian blinds, illusion blinds to not have multiple colors is that their individual panels are of comparatively smaller size which makes it difficult for the color to pop out when such blinds are in opened or are in a closed state.

Should the color of blinds match with furniture?

Blinds that are used over smaller size windows do not have to match with the color of furniture whereas large size blinds used over sliding windows should be in a color that matches with the primary color of the furniture.

Small size blinds look best when they blend seamlessly with the background i.e their color should not be very different from the color of the wall. If a small size blind used in a color that is highly contrasting with the color of wall then instead of adding aesthetic appeal, it looks like an obstruction in the middle of wall.

Most interior designers do not use the same color for blinds as the primary color of furniture. A number of factors like the color of wall, color of carpet are considered to get the appropriate color for blinds. If the color of furniture is very abundant in the room then the color for blinds should be such that it balances out the color of furniture.

Should all blinds have the same color?

Yes, all the blinds that are used over the windows in a particular room should have the same colors. This makes the window area looks cohesive.

When different rooms are painted in different colors then instead of using same color blinds for every room, the color of blinds should be such that it coordinates with the paint color of walls in different rooms.

Now we know that the color of blinds should be same but if the fabric blinds have certain pattern over them then it is also a good practice to use the same patterns blinds over all the windows in the room. Using blinds of different pattern even though in same color might look out of order.

In a room with multiple windows some interior designers also use one blinds with pattern while other blinds are completely plain without any patterns but all the blinds have the same color. This also maintains the cohesiveness of the design.

Should blinds be lighter in color than window?

It not always necessary for blinds to be in a color that is lighter than the window. It is rather all about making a contrast in colors.This contrast can be made wither by using a blind of a lighter color than window or a blind with darker color than that of windows.

If there is a need for adding a darker color in the room because the walls, the floor and windows all are in a light color then the blinds should definitely be of darker color than the window and vice versa.
