10 decorative items to hang next to a large picture

It is a common scenario when there is a beautifully big size picture hanging on the wall and still a lot of space is left around the picture. This space can be filled with certain decor items. Below are 10 such items that can be used around big pictures.

1/10.

Small pictures

A clever trick to make use of an empty area around a large picture is to arrange multiple small-sized pictures around it. There are only three things to consider while arranging pictures on wall.

Size of small pictures

Ideally, the small pictures should be 1/2 or 1/3 the size of bigger picture. The purpose of small pictures is only to emphasize the bigger picture and also to make a geometric design with other-sized pictures.

The smaller is the size of additional pictures, the greater the flexibility to arrange pictures in any pattern.

In a picture collage, both the 1/2 and 1/3 sizes for small pictures can be used together.

What pattern or arrangement to make

Simply, placing all pictures next to each other on a wall in parallel and perpendicular position will look like a pattern on its own. Just make sure that no picture or artwork is placed at a tilt or with respect to other images.

The arrangement of pictures on the wall is determined by the size and number of pictures to be used. If two pictures are to be installed with a bigger picture than hanging one picture on each side of the bigger picture is the best option. If there are 3 pictures then hang all three pictures on the same side.

Spacing of pictures in the arrangement

It is not important for all the pictures to be at the exact same distance from one another. Generally speaking, a gap of an inch between two pictures is ideal for making a collage on wall.

Clock

If the color of wall clock matches that of picture then a wall clock can be placed next to a picture. For both looks and functionality, the wall clock next to a picture should be placed at a height of 5 feet from the floor.

There are some pictures in which clock is already attached to them. In such pictures, the clock is designed precisely to match the artwork and thus blends with the picture seamlessly.

But in case of installing a new clock to a completely different artwork a gap of about 2 -3 inches must be kept from the picture also the wall clock should not be bigger than the picture itself.

Neon signs

Neon signs next to a picture can completely change the look and feel of the room. Neon lights add a excitement in the ambiance. If picture is in a room where one does parties occasionally then neon light sign can be a great option to fill up the space around big pictures.

Since the picture is inside the home the neon sign should be of smaller size. Ideally, a width of 6 inches and a height of 7 inches is appropriate for a neon sign next to a picture. A bigger size neon sign can easily look overdone as inside a room be it living room or bedroom, during night time, a relaxing ambiance is required.

A small size neon light favours a relaxing ambiance. A bigger one can become distracting.

Light fixtures

Light fixtures like wall sconces, pendant lights can be placed near the sides of a big picture to both illuminate the picture in the dark as well as to fill the space on the wall.

Either wall sconces or pendant lights both these light fixture should be placed at a gap of 6 inches from the sides of the painting. This gap ensures that light falls smoothly on the picture.

These light sources when used in pairs should have a brightness of around 300 lumens each. A too bright light source near the picture can result in unwanted glares. The color temperature of light sources for illuminating artwork should be daylight white.

A warmer color temperature can also be used for light if a relaxing ambiance is to be created but it can make the colors of the artwork appear different.

Metal wall art

Metal wall art or hang art is simply a home decor item made out of metal and is intended to be placed somewhere on the wall. It can be placed individually on a blank wall also.

If there is a plenty of empty space around a picture, a metal wall art with LEDs can be an excellent addition to the overall aesthetic of the wall.

Since, this particular decor item is to be used for covering the extra space around a big picture, its size therefore, should also be smaller compared to the picture.

A bigger size metal wall art or a size equal to the painting can shift the focus from painting and make the hang art to be the focus of attention.
